A 59 year old woman (aged 70 at trial) was awarded an out of court settlement of £800,000 as a result of loss of sight caused by medication prescribed by Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

In 2001 a consultant employed by Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust prescribed the claimant hydroxychloroquine for her short-term alopecia. Her GP then continued to prescribe the drug for eight years without carrying out any assessments or reviews.

During that time the claimant did not undergo any monitoring of her visual fields. In 2009 she was certified as blind as a result of hydroxychloroquine retinal toxicity.

The claimant suffered from orthopaedic injuries from numerous falls as a result of her loss of vision. Her home had to be adapted to make it safe for her to continue to live in.
