A 59-year-old woman, aged 70 at the time of trial, was awarded an out-of-court settlement of £800,000 after losing her sight due to medication prescribed by Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. In 2001, a consultant prescribed hydroxychloroquine for her alopecia, and her GP continued the prescription for eight years without conducting any visual assessments. During this time, the claimant received no monitoring of her vision, and in 2009, she was declared blind due to hydroxychloroquine retinal toxicity.
The loss of vision led to numerous falls, causing orthopaedic injuries, and her home had to be adapted for safety. Her husband became her primary carer, although he was battling terminal cancer. The settlement included £200,000 in general damages for pain, suffering, and loss of amenity, and also covered the cost of expert assistance to manage her settlement in a personal injury trust.
