Staircasing is when an owner of shared ownership property buys additional shares in the property from the housing association.
With most housing associations, shares are divided into blocks of 10% - this being the minimum percentage that a housing association tenant can buy at any one time. Once you own 100% of the shares you will no longer be required to pay rent to the housing association.
