Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (2013) case study
A 34 year old woman was awarded a total of £30,000 (£31,334.67 RPI adjusted) in an out of court settlement for scarring left by ulcers sustained as a result of pressure sores.
The woman, who was 31 at the date of her injury, was admitted to the labour ward of a hospital within the Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for the delivery of her first child.
The delivery was difficult and involved an epidural, and following the baby's birth the claimant was transferred to another ward. Here she developed extensive grade two pressure ulcers over her left and right buttocks -- meaning she sustained partial thickness loss of the dermis.
The injury left her in pain and with a long term vulnerability to further pressure damage. Although the pressure ulcers healed within 4 to 5 months, they left scars of 6 x 4 cm on the right buttock and 4 x 2 cm on the left. Her pre-existing anxiety disorder was also exacerbated by her injuries.
During the first 6 months of her daughter's life the impact of these injuries affected her ability to care for the baby.
It was expected that a course of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) would help the claimant to fully recover from her psychiatric injuries.
