University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (2002) Case Study
A 45-year-old woman was awarded £7,500 by Northampton County Court following a negligent gallbladder removal surgery. At age 40, she underwent a laparoscopic cholecystectomy at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, which resulted in complications, including bile leakage and peritonitis. A second surgery, involving open surgery, was needed to repair the damage.
Although her recovery was generally good, she experienced significant post-operative pain, lost weight, and required assistance for daily tasks. Four months later, she regained strength but was left with tender, lumpy scars and a lasting fear of future hospitalisation.

Judge Harris QC awarded the claimant a compensation payment of £7,500 (£11,278.13 RPI adjusted) for general damages, for the pain, suffering and loss of amenity that she had sustained over the 4 month period.
