The dependants of a man who died as a result of a chemotherapy overdose at a hospital within the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust were awarded £350,000 (£407,915.92 RPI adjusted) in an out of court settlement.

The man, who was aged 27 at the time of his death, was undergoing treatment for testicular cancer which had spread.

As part of the treatment he was to be given 15,000 units of the chemotherapy drug Bleomycin. As a result of an administrative error, the hospital instead administered 30,000 units on seven occasions.

This caused interstitial pulmonary fibrosis, meaning the man had difficulty breathing. His health continued to deteriorate and he died five months after commencing the treatment.

The cause of death was stated as interstitial pulmonary fibrosis caused by a Bleomycin overdose.

Compensation Settlement

The deceased man's estate settled its claim for damages as part of a single payment of £350,000 (£407,915.92 RPI adjusted) which also covered claims by his dependants and three claims by persons suffering nervous shock as a result of his death.

The amount included £7,500 (£8,741.06 RPI adjusted) for general damages to the deceased for pain, suffering and loss of amenity during the five months before his death were estimated at £7,500.
