Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust (2011) - Case Study

A 53-year-old woman accepted £100,000 in an out-of-court settlement after suffering an antibiotic overdose at a hospital within the Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, leading to acute kidney failure.

At age 51, the woman was admitted for recurring chest infections and prescribed intravenous gentamicin, a strong antibiotic. Despite the hospital's antibiotic pharmacist recommending the treatment be stopped, it continued, resulting in an overdose. This led to acute kidney injury and hyperkalaemia, a condition where high potassium levels cause serious complications.
