South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (2010) - Case Study
39-year-old woman accepted £7,500 in an out-of-court settlement after sustaining injuries during childbirth at a hospital within the South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
At age 31, after giving birth, the attending registrar pulled on the umbilical cord, causing it to snap and the placenta to deliver in pieces. The woman was discharged but experienced flu-like symptoms and, four weeks later, passed a large blood clot.
An ultrasound revealed retained pregnancy tissue, which was removed via a minor procedure known as an ERPC. As a result, she developed Asherman’s syndrome, causing uterine scarring, stopping her periods, and significantly reducing her chances of conceiving. Fortunately, her menstrual cycle returned to normal five years later, and she was able to conceive naturally.
Compensation settlement
Damages of £7,500 (£8,557.36 RPI adjusted) were agreed in an out-of-court settlement for the pain, suffering and loss of amenity caused by the injury.
