A three-year-old girl was awarded £2,150 as a result of burns sustained through the negligent application of electrodes while undergoing tests at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust.

The girl, who was aged 11 months at the time of the injury, attended the hospital with her parents to undergo tests due to her failure to thrive. She underwent a sweat test for coeliac disease and cystic fibrosis that involved the application of metal electrodes to her right forearm.

One of the electrodes was applied incorrectly, without a protective rubber pad. As a result the girl sustained burns to her right forearm in the shape of two small circles. Initially the burns had the appearance of blisters, but were diagnosed as burns the following day when the girl was taken to her GP.

The burnt skin wept for approximately two weeks before forming a scab and healing. Medical evidence confirmed that the child had sustained partial thickness burns and was left with two scars. One of the scars was slightly raised and visible at a conversational distance, while the other was less noticeable but still visible at close inspection.

The prognosis was that the scars would be permanent but would become less conspicuous as the child grew older. Her parents were concerned that the scars had a similar appearance to cigarette burns, and were upset when a specific comment of such nature was made in a social setting.
