A 32-year-old woman accepted damages of £7,500 (£8,147.14 RPI adjusted) after hospital doctors failed to diagnose an ectopic pregnancy, causing significant pain and anxiety.

The woman who was 30 at the time of the injury, attended a hospital within the Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust following an episode of vaginal bleeding and abdominal pain. Doctors performed an ultrasound scan but did not detect any signs of pregnancy.

The woman returned to hospital two days after further heavy bleeding. Medics diagnosed constipation. The claimant was sent home where her symptoms continued to escalate. She was admitted to hospital two weeks later. This time, an ectopic pregnancy was diagnosed.

Doctors performed an emergency laparoscopy to remove the claimant's right fallopian tube. She remained in hospital for two days following the procedure and made a full recovery within two months.

The claimant brought a misdiagnosis compensation claim on the basis that her ectopic pregnancy should have been diagnosed much earlier. She accepted that her fallopian tube would have been removed in any event. However, she argued that the intense pain, discomfort and vaginal bleeding she experienced between her second visit to hospital and her eventual diagnosis could have been avoided. In total, this amounted to a period of 19 days.

Compensation settlement

General damages for pain, suffering and loss of amenity of £7,500 (£8,147.14 RPI adjusted) were agreed in an out-of-court settlement.
