Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust clinical negligence case study
The family of a deceased man reached an out of court settlement of £25,000 following injuries sustained while he was in the care of Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.
The man, aged 69 at the time of the injury, underwent a hip replacement in Guy's and St Thomas' hospital, for which an epidural was administered. He met with a physiotherapist each day following the operation, who attempted to mobilise him.
The patient complained that the backs of his heels were extremely sore. He developed pressure sores post-operatively, but because the wounds were concealed within TED compressions stockings, they were not noticed.
The TED stockings were not removed until 10 days after the hip operation, after the patient was discharged from hospital. When they were removed there was a large black circle on each of his heels. After being discharged from hospital he was unable to mobilise properly for at least nine months because of the severe pain caused by the pressure areas on the backs of his heels.
He was unable to carry out tasks for himself and depended on his partner to assist him with tasks including washing, dressing and undressing, preparing meals and performing household tasks. As a result of the wounds he was no longer able to drive.
The wounds took eight months to heal, and the man was left with permanent scarring, which reduced his mobility. After nine months he was recovered sufficiently to walk short distances, and left his flat when he could. However, he continued to experience pain in his heels and was unable to walk or stand for extended periods.
