Birmingham Children's Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (2007) Case Study
A 4 year old boy was awarded £9,000 at Birmingham County Court after negligent care in the ICU caused permanent scarring and a bald patch on the back of his head.
The boy was admitted to Birmingham Children's Hospital for surgery to treat a congenital heart abnormality when only 7 months old. He was placed in intensive care to recover from his operation, but whilst there he developed a pressure sore on the left side of his head at the back of his scalp.
Caused by hospital staff failing to move the boy's head during the post-operative rehabilitation period, the sore was due to avascular necrosis (the death of bone tissue), and was visible as a black patch.
It was foul-smelling and leaked pus, and took several weeks of repeated dressing by the boy's GP before it began to heal.
Once fully healed the sore left a pale, flat scar measuring 4cm by 1.5cm over the left parietal bone, towards the back of the head. The scar was not painful to touch, but no hair was able to grow in the area.
Medical evidence concluded that the boy would have a permanent scar with an associated area of permanent baldness. Although he was not particularly self-conscious about this at the age of 4, this cosmetic deficit of mild to moderate severity may impact in later life.
