Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (2011) - Case Study

A 41-year-old woman reached an out-of-court settlement of £6,000 following a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) caused by improper treatment at Barking, Havering, and Redbridge University Hospital Trust. The claimant had visited A&E in 2011 for a left foot injury, where she was mistakenly diagnosed with a fractured metatarsal and had her leg immobilised in a cast.

When the cast was removed a week later, it was revealed that there was no fracture and that the cast had been applied too tightly. The next day, the claimant experienced pain and swelling in her calf, and was diagnosed with DVT. She was treated with heparin injections to prevent further blood clots and required to wear high-grade compression hosiery for at least two years. Additionally, she had to wear the hosiery on long journeys and stopped using the contraceptive pill due to an increased risk of DVT. The claimant was left with a 20% ongoing risk of developing another DVT.
