Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (2011) - Case Study
A 41 year old woman (43 years at trial) reached an out of court settlement of £6,000 following a deep vein thrombosis sustained after her leg was immobilised at a hospital in the Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospital Trust.
The claimant attended the A&E department at the Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals in 2011 complaining of an injury to her left foot.
Following an x-ray, staff in the department diagnosed a fractured metatarsal bone and immobilised the claimant's left leg in a below-the-knee back slab plaster of Paris cast.
When the claimant returned the following week to have the cast removed she was advised that there was no fracture and that the cast had been applied too tightly.
A day later the claimant experienced pain and swelling in her left calf, caused by a deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
This was treated with injections of heparin to help thin the blood and prevent further blood clots developing.
The claimant had to wear below-the-knee grade 3 (high) compression hosiery for a minimum of 2 years to reduce the risk of further DVT. She was also required to wear the compression hosiery for any journey longer than 4 hours.
She had previously smoked and was a contraceptive pill user. This was stopped as it increased the risk of further DVT.
The claimant had an ongoing 20% risk of sustaining another DVT.
