£3,750 awarded for food poisoning on Nile cruise

A 38-year-old woman was awarded £3,750 in compensation after contracting salmonella poisoning during a cruise ship holiday. The claimant began feeling unwell within 48 hours of arriving on the cruise, suffering from vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal cramping, eventually fainting. She was diagnosed with salmonella poisoning and received emergency treatment aboard the ship.

Upon returning to the UK, she was admitted to the hospital for three days, receiving intravenous fluids and antibiotics. Although discharged after six days, her symptoms, including abdominal cramps and fatigue, persisted for six weeks. She was unable to work for three weeks and remained symptomatic for up to 12 more weeks, causing anxiety during her pregnancy, though her baby was unaffected.

The claimant fully recovered 28 months after the illness began. The cruise line was found negligent for failing to provide a safe environment, resulting in the salmonella infection. The case was heard at Sheffield County Court, where the court awarded £3,750 in damages for pain, suffering, and loss of amenity.
